Candlestick Charts

Candlestick charts provide a complete picture of what has occurred to a security by displaying the opening, high, low and closing prices for a security (for intraday charts, the closing price is taken to be the last price at which a transaction in a security took place).

  • Candlestick Charts
    • The box that makes up the difference between the opening and the closing price is called the body of the candlestick.
    • A solid candlestick means that the closing price was lower than the opening price.
    • A hollow candlestick means that the closing price was higher than the opening price.
    • The vertical lines outside the body are called the shadow or the wick.
    • The vertical line above the body of the candlestick shows the high price.
    • The vertical line below the body of the candlestick shows the low price.
